Inspired by street wear, hip-hop culture and – rather surprisingly – graffiti, Barbara Bui’s SS15 collection is a tribute to cultural mix.
In an unusual combination of inspiration, slouchy trousers, draped dresses and skirts, oversized blazers and structured jackets reference Buddhist monks and spirituality on one hand and tough street culture on the other. While the hand-patched embroidery seen on trousers, jackets and blazers is obviously drawn from Ancient Indian culture, the graffiti tag inspiration behind the embroidery is much more subtle.
The intricate mirror embroidery and pops of bright orange added a lively splash of colour to the designer’s usual monochromatic look and contrast the simple colour palette of the rest of the collection. All-white pieces in particular highlight Bui’s technical skills and her elaborate tailoring and draping.
Once again, flats were favoured over stilettos as pointy-toed brogues in metallic hues gave a laid-back vibe to the collection.
